Lustrous, Natural Silk Fibers

The captivating appearance of a 100% silk rug emerges from its unique luster and sheen. The hand woven silk fibers reflect light and shadows, transforming their appearance from moment to moment. If you’ve ever heard of a ‘light’ side and a ‘dark’ side of a rug, there is no other material that more embodies this concept: as weavers create their knots, they pull down on the yarn. 

This results in the rug’s nap, meaning that individual strands of yarn fall one direction across the entire rug. Once the rug is complete, this means that the rug will look completely different from one end or the other, and the direction in which a rug is laid is always an important thing to consider when placing it in a room. This applies especially so to silk rugs, which are reflect light and shadow like no other.

As one of the strongest natural fibers, ultra-fine natural silk enables our artisans to weave intricate patterns with a tight weave in dense texture, resulting in wonderfully detailed designs and vibrant, lively areas of color. These qualities afford the carpet a resilience that retains shape and character for many years if properly maintained.

The Rebel Silk process evolves ancient Tibetan carpet-weaving practices to ensure that each rug possesses a unique and sacred geometry with nearly infinite hues of delicately hand-dyed silk. This category was crafted and charted by the hands of artisans to be admired by the eyes of connoisseurs. 

Our Rebel Silk technique is exclusive to Tufenkian and is created by hand with multicolored silks in seemingly random placements in our shakti quality, with a pile height of about ½”. Most are cut pile, but some designs also utilize checkerboard construction with knots that alternate between loop and cut every 2–3 knots. 

These techniques require remarkable skill to create. Each piece in our collection embodies such mastery, which becomes immediately apparent when you see and feel the carpet.
